Ten-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic has been eliminated from the 2024 Australian Open semifinals in four sets by Italian Jannick Sinner.
The 36-year-old Serb was aiming for a 25th Grand Slam and an 11th championship in Melbourne, which would have extended his record.
However, the 22-year-old Sinner put on an incredible show to win 6-1 6-2 6-7 (8) 6-3.
With an eye on a first-ever Slam in the final on Sunday, he will now take on Alexander Zverev or Daniil Medvedev.
This was Djokovic’s first Australian Open semifinal defeat, as he has lifted the trophy each of the ten times that he has advanced to the final four.
However, the Word Number 1 was noticeably inferior to Sinner, who remarkably won just three games in the opening two sets.
In a third-set tie-break, the World No. 1 saved match point to force his way back into the match.
However, Sinner answered with a break in the subsequent set’s fourth game that turned out to be crucial.
